Gather with others, relax and warm yourself in the bright sun room.

This time we headed over to newly opened Gakuya. Gakuya is a 20 minute walk from Musashi-Sakai station (with buses from Kichijoji, Mitaka and Chofu stations). That said, the house is very spacious for a property in the city with a sunroom and Japanese-style table, something you don’t usually see in other share houses. This is a place those wanting to relax on their days off (and relax in large numbers) or those working in the Mitaka area should have a look at.

The Garden
Beside the communal living room extends a spacious sunroom and landscaped garden for tenants to tinker in before your your very eyes. The fresh air and sunlight is what makes the interior so spacious.
Japanese-style seating
The living room is designed in Japanese-style with a ‘horigotatsu’, a table low to the ground with a large hole beneath it to put your feet, to sit at while gazing at the view outside. How great would it be to look out at the changing seasons with your housemates as the sunlight filters gently in through the large window?

So, let’s begin at the entrance. There is a vending machine on the premises.

The path leading to the parking space beside the entrance looks great.

The adjacent parking space can fit 2 cars easily which can be rented for 10,500 yen per month, per car.

Let’s head on inside. Plenty of shoe storage space has been built so as not to inconvenience anyone.

As the house is new the hallways and walls are pristine.

Opening the nearest door we find the dining room, which leads to the Japanese-style room with the table and sunroom.

It is possible to close off the two rooms with a sliding door. This will definitely come in handy when living here.

A closer look at the Japanese-style room.

Opposite is the kitchen and dining area. If you get on well with your housemates you’ll have a ball living here, and you are able to enjoy the dining room, living room and the garden while cooking away in the kitchen.

Let’s have a closer look at the kitchen in its pristine condition. This is the sink.

And the gas stove with 3 burners.

Cookware is provided so there is no need to buy anything.

All kitchen appliances are brand new.

The dining room from a different angle. There is a large refrigerator.

Let’s head in to the living room from the dining room, or I could say ‘Japanese-style room with the Japanese-style table’ but that’s probably a bit long winded.

The Japanese-made lamps add a touch of elegance.

A different angle giving a close up of the new tatami mats. Unfortunately we can’t convey the new tatami smell through text.

The sunroom. Spacious enough to stretch out and relax.

The sunroom sofa. It gets great sunlight, perfect for enjoying a book.

The sunroom faces the garden. Someone who loves every season’s trees and flowers should live here.

It was the beginning of summer when we came to take photos and the hibiscus were blooming.

Standing out in the garden it’s easy to get lost in deep conversation and time goes by before you know it. Now, back to the shoot!

The bathroom on the 1F is a bright and cheerful room unlike those you usually find in share houses.

A washbasin in the hallway. At the back there is a shower room.

A shot of the shower from the doorway.

The toilet.

Females will be happy to know that it also comes equipped with a sound-muffling device.

There is also a toilet on the 2F.

The staircase.

There is a wide verandah on the 2F.

Let’s move onto the rooms. This is Room 2.

The wallpaper uses an invigorating sky pattern.

All rooms are equipped with remote control lighting and air conditioning.

Room 1

It is possible for 2 people to live in this room, and has a large closet.

Room 6 on the 2F.

Room 7.

There are tension rods installed in Room 7.

One wall of Room 4 has been built with wine boxes. Each room layout is different and playful and you are bound to be in two minds over which room to choose for yourself when you come to have a look.

This is Room 5 in the middle of the 2F.

All rooms are individual rooms to guarantee your privacy.

Gakuya is an old house that has been brought back to life through renovation. As soon as you enter the front door you are met with the openness of the kitchen, dining, Japanese-style room and garden. Use the dining and Japanese-style room together as one or shut the sliding doors to separate the rooms depending on your use. On the 2F upstairs there is a communal washing machine and verandah, so you can wash, dry and fold all on the same level. All of the windows are large and with the spacious terrace and garden you are able to live your life in leisure, a lifestyle one is hard pressed to come by in the middle of the city.

There aren’t many share houses in the city of Mitaka yet, so those of you working in the area and are interested in this kind of lifestyle should make your way over and check Gakuya out.
