A former-ryokan sharehouse with a Japanese-style garden!

The word ‘ryokan’, or traditional Japanese inn, may be associated with old Japan but to the Japanese it represents a sense of unchanging comfort. It brings to mind warm wooden interiors and the sweet scent of tatami mats.

The property we will be introducing to you today is a former ryokan transformed into a stylish, modern sharehouse.
The owner has renovated the ryokan into a modern space he himself would love to live in full of ideas and aspects that tenants will love.

All rooms are single, private rooms with 2 rooms on the 1st floor and 13 rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floor. There is also a spacious rooftop area as well.
This sharehouse, with all the charms of a ryokan, will make Japanese house guests reminiscent of the school trips of their happy, elementary school days and the fact that they can rediscover those exact feelings again as an adult will excite them.
The house is located in an area only a 2-minute walk from Tsuruhashi station. Tsuruhashi sits on the border of the Tennouji and Ikuno districts, in the infamous Korean Town, and the neighborhood surrounding the sharehouse is home to many Korean BBQ and Korean cuisine restaurants as well as a shopping district.

The area is actually a very public transport-friendly place connecting Kansai. With the start of a joint operation between the Kintetsu and Hanshin railway companies in 2009, it evolved into a large stopover station used by JR, Kintetsu and 3 subway lines. In short, it’s a very convenient location to get to major areas in Kansai without changing trains.

Now then, let’s have a look inside the house!

This sharehouse is a Showa-era retro former ryokan with its tatami flooring evoking the gentle ambiance of yesteryear.

Mr. Yamamoto, the manager of this operation, wanted to create a house in which both old and new residents could maintain equal relationships with each other. Spending time and sharing lives with fellow sharemates under the one roof creates a family-like bond regardless of whether or not they are related by blood. By cultivating honest relationships you can ensure that you won’t be disappointed in your choice to live in a sharehouse.

This former ryokan-style sharehouse is in a great location with easy access and a great local environment. I highly recommend the Tsuruhashi area to anyone looking to start afresh somewhere new.
