Have you ever dreamed of a big white house that appears in like American dramas? The house called “TOKYO SHARE Nishimagome” we covered this time, is just such a place. Initially, a foreign embassy employee’s family lived in this house, and it now has been fully renovated.

The nearest station is Nishimagome Station, it is the first station on the Toei Asakusa Line. It takes 20 minutes to Shibuya by transfer to Gotanda. A 5-minute walk to the station, and there are also convenience stores around the house. It is a quiet residential area with a convenient location. So, it is an excellent place to live for those who often go to the city center for commuting or going to school everyday life.

When you visit this house, you’ll probably be surprised at the pure white appearance — a spacious house with high ceilings in European and American style. Actually, a family from abroad lived in this house, and the building makes us think like surely they had a precious life in this house.

This building has been reborn as a share house. The large living room integrated with the kitchen and the renovated sink area is immaculate. The aim was to create a comfortable space so that all 15 households could share their lives without stress. Also, there is a park in front of the house, so you can relax on holidays and enjoy play sports at there.

Let’s take a quick look at what is going on inside the house!

We asked the person in charge of management about the recommended points of “TOKYO SHARE Nishimagome”.

In the first part of this Music lover series article, we introduced “Otowa Kotake Mukaihara”, a share house located 8 minutes from Ekoda Station. This time, I would like to introduce “Crann Terrace Kugahara” a huge share house with 62 rooms near the Tokyu Ikegami Line.

“Crann Terrace Kugahara” takes its name from the meaning behind the Irish word “Crann” which means a group of people with a strong common interest” a group that creates deep links and becomes like a family.
As the words suggest, living in a clan makes you feel comfortable and secure as you were living with your real family members. A place where you can share and enjoy your favorite music without worries.

Let’s take a look at what this sharehouse can offer to all the music lovers!

For more information about “Crann Terrace Kugahara”, please click here

“Crann Terrace Kugahara” is located in Kugahara, Otaku, Tokyo. A beautiful green scenario with a peaceful atmosphere. A town that you wouldn’t imagine to find in the busy Tokyo.

After walking under the bright blue sky in a street filled with drugstores, supermarkets, cafes and post offices for around 5 minutes we arrived in a residential area. A light gray chic building stood in from of us… we finally arrived at “Crann Terrace Kugahara”.
The neighborhood was so quiet and smooth that we wondered: “Can you really play music freely in a place like this?” With these uncertain feelings, we went inside.
To our surprise, the first area to visit was the basement. I somehow wanted to stay in the bright, wide, and cozy living room which was decorated with a full of greenery like a jungle. “Being here and relax while listening to my favorite music must be paradise.” I thought.
But the basement is probably the best place for a real music lover in this house. Let me tell you why…

Yeah! It’s a karaoke room!

A soundproof karaoke room is available in the basement, recommended for those who like singing! At “Crann Terrace Kugahara”, you can enjoy singing from morning till evening.
Share Houses with karaoke rooms are super rare so no wonder why this room was the first stop to visit in this house. It even has a stand microphone and comfortable sofa in front of a 40-inch tv. I know this article is about music but if you happen to be a games lover the basement would blow your mind! but that might be a story to tell in another report.
Besides the karaoke room, I would like to introduce another special room for music lovers. This area is so large that all residents living in this sharehouse can enter! It’s like a huge stage where daily lives take place.

There are several share houses in Tokyo with soundproof rooms but it is very rare to find one with a soundproof room that is available for 24 hours. Moreover, this area also works as a studio which is equipped with a piano and drums that can be played whenever you want! Just imagine it. You could get up a little earlier than usual and practice before going to work or play yourself a lullaby before going to bed. It sounds so nice that I want to move in right now!

“Clan Terrace Kugahara is well equipped for music lovers.”

Miss Kondo from Tokyo Defense Co., Ltd., is the person in charge of this share house and she kindly introduced the place to the team of Tokyo Sharehouse.

“Here are a lot of people who have a passion for music. Since we organize an event once every two months we have the chance to enjoy the performance of our residences.”, she said.

Working during the day and sharing our favorite hobbies at night. We don’t have to give up on our passion because of being noisy problems or not having enough time or money to rent a studio. Everything is possible in “Crann Terrace Kugahara”! And the best part is that you will always be part of the “clan”, the family that you’ve have made in a share house. This is happiness.

I’ve introduced the karaoke room, the soundproof room, and the studio already but this is also a highly recommended “good room” in the house. Remember I talked about the living room before? Right after the main entrance, passing through a corridor nicely decorated with pictures, and a big chart with photos of the residences, you can find a forest! I mean…the living room.

As soon as we came in, the residents in the living room gave us a friendly greeting. I was able to feel already part of the clan. Some people were drawing, others listening to music on the sofa, and others working. The atmosphere was peaceful and cozy that I could spend hours here without worrying about anything else than doing what I like. It’s amazing how people with a variety of personalities could live together in perfect harmony like this.

Most of the residents are employees, the ratio of gender is 1:1, and everyone seems to be close and friendly. According to Miss Kondo, on weekends the living room becomes the scenario where many events, workshops, and other activities take place. There are various contents, such as cooking together, watching movies, holding welcome parties or just exchanging thoughts about a determined topic. Also, events such as Halloween, Christmas party, and birthday parties are part of the events schedule in this sharehouse. Of course, participation is free! So do not hesitate to join ~
Moving to another good point in this sharehouse ( yes, this house has plenty of good points!!) It can’t be helped to admire the great terrace behind the glass wall from the living room.
The terrace happens to be a special place for the residents. Of course, the name of this share house is “Crann Terrace Kugahara” for someone good reason: A terrace like this is hard to see in ordinary houses, apartments, or even other share houses. Some residents have decided to move in just because of this terrace. What does make it so special? Maybe this article isn’t long enough to explain the reasons or maybe you should come in and find the reason by yourself :)

If music wasn’t enough to bring together people then food will bring us together for sure.

“The kitchen was designed to be wide so everyone can gather together in this space. We often have a ” Pizza Party ” where pizza is baked from the dough,” said happily Miss Kondo of Tokyo Defense Co., Ltd.

The kitchen is one of the places in the house where conversations flow easily that is why “Crann Terrace Kugahara” offers to the residents a well-equipped area to enjoy while cooking with your housemates. Most of the food offered in the events are made by all the residents together.
Miss Kondo: “Company members also are looking forward to taking part in the events held in the house!”

Normally, people from the operator companies do not interact with residents. However, the philosophy of “Tokyo Defense Co., Ltd.” is to enjoy the challenge and cherish bonds.

And Miss Kondo herself wants to be a person who can rely on when something happens. She seems to really love her job, more than a job it’s like taking care of your family members.

I couldn’t agree more with the words of Miss Kondo. In this era, where the internet and cellphones have become an extension of our arms, we tend to keep our eyes away from others’ faces and live inside our cellphone’s screens. We get to interact less with real people and it gets worse if we are living alone.

The amazing thing about living in a sharehouse, from my point of view and experience, is that the atmosphere itself invites you to leave the cellphone aside and casually talk to your housemates. Building relationships and make them stronger as we continue sharing in the community is really heartwarming. And those are the bonds that Tokyo Defense wants to protect as a company.

Tokyo Defense is not only a share house in Ota Ward, Shinagawa Ward.
It is a company that also handles rental business and nursery school. No wonder why they emphasize giving the best hospitality and quality of the lifestyle to their residents in “Crann Terrace Kugahara” so well.
Miss Kondo: “Because the company is the owner and house operator of Crann Terrace Kugahara we get to know well all the residents. The proximity to them is really close. ”
And I can give credit to the words of Miss Kondo. While we were doing the visit, all the residents had a casual and friendly talk with Miss Kondo. Some of them even joked around with her and encourage her to smile during the photo shooting. “Don’t worry! You are pretty so any shoot would make you look nice” said one of the residents to Miss Kondo with laughs. It was a nice feeling being able to see such a good friendship between them.
“Making share house life more enjoyable”
The passion of Tokyo Defense in creating long term relationships with its residence is admirable. They are committed to show all the positive sides of living in a Sharehouse. Of course, there are troublesome things too but all family members have some little fights as well, right? The important is to come over those minor things and create enjoyable memories together.

Life in a sharehouse brings new encounters and cultivates a person’s values. Living in one for the first time can be nerve-racking.

That’s why we head off to find out exactly who is living in these sharehouses!

We visited Stylio With Kamiikedai, a sharehouse in the Ota Ward’s Kamiikedai with a theme focused around food. The main feature of the house is its common area, which include a large kitchen and dining area, lounge space and work space. Timber furniture used throughout the interior creates a natural and warm atmosphere within.

Events such as Christmas and birthday parties are held at the house and often catered by the residents themselves. Stylio With Kamiikedai not only has all the bells and whistles, it also fosters strong bonds and interactions among housemates.

We spoke to two residents whose own values and ideals broadened by living in such an amazing house. Let’s hear what they have to say!

Sharehouses without a theme or even sharehouses with low rent seem to invite all kinds of people. While that may be fun and exciting itself, I think that the people here in our house are a special bunch. I personally love the singer Gen Hoshino, and I might hear one of his song being played somewhere in the house. I love getting to know people who I have something in common with. The theme is really the best thing about the house.

Haruka

I also don’t think I would be here if it weren’t for the theme. I looked around at many other houses before moving in here, and they all had the same kind of stylish interior design that could be replicated anywhere. This house, on the other hand, has a theme and stories can be created here.

—So, the best thing abou the house is the theme! What else is special about
the house?

Ami

People who live here are very generous and giving. If there were a kitchen on each level instead of one big one, I don’t think we would be communicating and interacting as we do. People come to the kitchen to cook, and conversation flows naturally when there is someone else making something at the same time as you. You talk while you’re cooking, and then end up eating together, too. I think it’s great.

Haruka

People here really have a giving spirit. When I first moved in and was still getting used to things, everyone would offer me food. Food was what allowed me to open up to the others and become comfortable in the house. It’s all give, give, give in this house!

—Give, give, give! Wow.

Ami

Yes. Give, give, give! (laughs)

Haruka

The people in our house really are generous, and if you sit down here a feast will soon appear before your eyes. It’s like, why do I get to eat such delicious food when I haven’t even lifted a finger? (laughs) I’ve come home tired from work not wanting to cook anything, and when I sat down I had food brought over to me!

—Lastly, a word to potential housemates, please!

HarukaYou should definitely talk to everybody! Talk to people who work in different fields, who have a different set of values, and broaden your view of the world. There are also people who are still trying to figure life and things out, and that there is another opportunity for interaction. Talk and communicate with these people and allow them to help you shape your own value system. Also, be generous, always offering others food and drink. Maintain the sharehouse has a warm, welcoming environment.AmiWhen I first moved in I was always wondering if I was sitting in someone else’s seat. (laughs) Everyone needs a little courage at first, but this house is very welcoming and you can sit where you want, or even just come down into the common areas to say hello and everyone will talk to you. I think it’s best if you make the first move, though. It’s easy to get along with everybody if you try. We are all friendly and you can talk to us easily. That’s all there is to know!—From their expressions when they spoke, it is evident that these two are taking full advantage of their sharehouse lifestyles.Thank you for taking the time to talk with us, Haruka and Ami!

The popularity of sharehouses has begun to spread across the country in recent years. I’m sure there are many of you out there interested in the concept, yet feel uneasy at the prospect of living together with people you’ve never met before.

What’s it like to live in a sharehouse? What kind of people live there? We took it upon ourselves to answer these questions by stopping by a sharehouse to show you!

We visited STYLIO WITH KAMIIKEDAI, a sharehouse in the lively Ota ward of Tokyo.
The sharehouse is a community within which residents can value food and cuisine, and enjoy each others company in the communal ‘Share Dining’ area. The house’s one year anniversary party was held recently with 35 attendees, with residents and house administrators alike mingling together.

Let’s have a look at how the party went down!

Preparing food for the party. When hosting a party people tend to rely on supermarket-bought platters or a catering service, but everything here is homemade by the housemates in their professional grade kitchen. This fellow has been enticed over to the table by a wonderful aroma. Can’t wait to see what this dish turns out like!

Guests have brought their favorite alcoholic beverages for the feast.

People start to gather in the dining hall one after another. Here’s a shot of some guests with their drink of choice.

Meanwhile, the food is ready! The table has been laid out in decadence without anyone noticing.

The table is garnished with paella, sauteed meat and more. This is genuine party food!

This dish looks as though it could be served at a French restaurant. Being able to enjoy such fine food at home is one of the unique things about living in a sharehouse.

With all of the dishes served, the party officially begins with a greeting from the 2nd housemate to move into the house. Everybody toasts.

Cheers! The sound of reverberating glass echoes the room. It’s a moment of supreme bliss.

Previous housemates also show their faces at the party, glad to be reunited with everyone once more.

The room is filled with smiles and laughter. Only in a sharehouse will you find musicians, company workers and even students all living together.

It’s exciting just to watch the scene unfolding before me. After devouring the main course, it’s time for what everyone has been waiting for.

You guessed it, it’s dessert time! Heaven for sweet tooths male and female alike. This guy is trying to remove hardened chocolate from a balloon. A few faces in the audience are covering their ears in preparation for the inevitable burst. What a charming sight.

There are smiles all around. Even though everyone is full from the delicious dinner had, there is always room for dessert.

Here’s a group shot in commemoration of the anniversary with everyone signing the ‘S’ from ‘STYLIO WITH KAMIIKEDAI’ with their hands. Personalities come out in this photo! Haha.

Everybody helps clean up. Laughing and bantering with housemates turns the most mundane of chores into fun-filled times.

At the end of the party we have the honor of watching a performance by a housemate with a beautiful voice.

The singer improvised when requests were shouted out by the crowd, met with cheers of joy, and also scattered laughter when lyrics were mistakenly sung. The whole performance was enjoyed in harmony.

After the party time was spent chilling out before the event drew to a close. Housemates lulled to sleep by the music wandered sleepily up to their rooms and those who still wanted to talk stayed down drinking and talking together. I would like to thank everyone who made this event possible today for all of their efforts!

The Japanese character for food is ‘食’, which is made up of the characters for person (人) and good (良) to mean ‘making a person better’. Food makes people better!

I good a good sense of the vibe of the house by my visit to STYLIO WITH KAMIIKEDAI.

Of course, not all days will be like this one, but I believe that the best thing about sharehouses is being able to talk to someone when you feel like talking and sharing what you are good at with the others in the house.

The house is currently running a free-rent campaign for new residents signing their contracts before the end of June and moving in before the end of July, offering one month of free rent. Feel free to contact the house and find out more if you’re interested in living here.

I will continue in my efforts to show the real world of sharehouses to our readers by covering more sharehouse events and sharehouse lifestyle articles in the future.

What does the color white make you think of? Undoubtedly many of you would say clean, pure and simple. We are surrounded by many different colors in our daily lives, and while we enjoy this, there is something about coming home to the simple shade of white that allows us to regain presence of mind.

The sharehouse we are showcasing today is exactly that – a clean and simple house encased in white, allthewhile having a luxuriousness to it, resulting in the perfect place to come home to. This is a female-exclusive house and the living rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors have been decorated in a different style to each other.

Let’s have a look inside!

’Sharehouse’ is a word that has come to be heard frequently in recent years, being in the spotlight on television and in other forms of media. Although his word has become increasingly familiar with the general public, at the same time there are a many different ideas of what a sharehouse is floating around out there.

Many people worry about privacy and think living in a sharehouse would be tiresome, however the staff running these houses are always brainstorming and implementing ideas for their residents to be able to maintain privacy as well as enjoy their time within the house.

Finest Kamada in particular boasts large living areas, bathrooms as well as private rooms with enough space that residents won’t have trouble maintaining their privacy at all. Not to mention that the brains behind this project is the company Fine Select, professionals in the industry with many female-exclusive sharehouses to their name. I personally got the impression that this house has been created with residents’ privacy in mind.

It’s up to you what kind of life you will lead in this pure white house with it’s brilliant yet at first unexpected shade. Imagine a life of new encounters with this as your backdrop!

I’m sure that there are a lot of people out there who feel a sharehouse’s greatest appeal is the sense of security in the fact that there is always someone waiting there for you when you come home.

If you’re looking for a large-scale yet unique sharehouse in which a variety of characters gather then you can find them anywhere. But if you want to live both an exciting and stimulating lifestyle with plenty of things to do within the house as well as have a place where you can relax and feel at home, then STYLIO WITH Kamiikedai is for you.

You can probably tell just by looking at the photos of the property, but one great thing about this house is its spectacular wide, open interior. It’s important in life to be able to come home from a hard day at work to such a refreshing environment. You can feel the extravagance of the house in its unique interior and smartly-designed communal areas.

You’ll be delighted by the kitchen in particular. The area is called TAULA and will surprise almost everyone with its state-of-the-art facilities to rival that of a restaurant or professional cooking classroom. The residents can use the areas as they please too, of course.

Alright then, let’s move on to look at the finer details of the house!

STYLIO WITH Kamiikedai was designed by Blue Studio and is managed by Connect House, providing a platform for a community with food as its theme, fully supporting tenants to be able to live in comfort.

By visiting the house you can tell that there is almost no strictness or feeling of oppression inside. It has a wide, spacious kitchen in which to languidly enjoy cooking and sharing food with other housemates. Location-wise there is a bit of distance from the local station, however it is definitely a place its residents won’t be able to wait to come home to of a day.

“His cooking is really great.” “I wish you were my wife.” Different conversations are sure to fly about when housemates sit down at the large dining table for a meal together. This house will naturally foster communication and a warm sense of security through talk about food, perhaps even something like “I got a lot of fresh fish today so I tried making this salad.”

Good food calms the mind, and before you know it you’ll start to try your hand at cooking and time spent eating together with housemates will increase.

During your time at this house you will come to feel as if you have known everyone forever. This sharehouse will help you to reenergise and regain forgotten joys through food.

You may be quite familiar with the words ‘Girls Night’, but it only came into the Japanese lexicon as ‘Joshi-kai’ in 2008. Did you know that it was such a new word?

What began with girl-only gatherings at an izakaya, which is a Japanese version of a bar or pub, has evolved into girls nights in limousines, at hotels, and even at hot spring resorts… many different kinds of ‘girls night’ have sprung forth for women to openly enjoy themselves in a somewhat out-of-the-ordinary environment.

Since there are so many different types of girls-only gatherings, we thought it would be great to hold one in a sharehouse, too, and so an event idea was born. With the help of members from female student groups Girls+ and Power of Woman the girls night event was a brilliant success.

The venue for the event was Crann Terrace Kugaoka, a sharehouse complete with a studio and reading room in the basement. It’s a soothing place surrounded by lush greenery, something quite hard to find in Tokyo. There is space within the house to cultivate one’s hobbies so that even the busiest of working adults without a lot of time on their hands can reduce their commute to work and spend that time instead on what they actually want to do.

Sharehouse Girls Night, a reimagined girls-only gathering. Will it be a success? Let’s get on with the report and find out!

This is what the interior of Crann Terrace Kugaoka looks like. It is a large-scale property to house 62 people. With the lush color of the ornaments and greenery against the soft ambiance of the wooden interior, the entire house feels very natural. It is also possible to host movie screenings in the courtyard, one of the best places in the house.

Or if watching movies outside isn’t your style, there is also a theatre room inside the house. You could even do yoga or dance in the studio or spend time relaxing quietly in the reading room. How great to be able to hold a girls night in such a beautiful place. A popular theme of girls-only gatherings at the moment is doing or experiencing something you don’t come in contact with in daily life, and this sharehouse is right on-trend with that.

At first we were the only ones in the spacious party venue, but participants began to arrive one by one and before I knew it the event had transformed into a brilliant affair. This was a girls-only event, but there were also a few males in attendance on the day, including Tokyo Sharehouse staff, no doubt uncomfortable and quite lost in the sea of females all around them…

To kick things off we were all given a tour of the house. Many people seemed to be impressed with the studio and theatre room in the basement, as was I when I first saw the house myself.

There might have been a few budding chefs in the crowd because everyone was gushing over the spacious kitchen. While everyone was going crazy I thought to myself that I would probably start cooking, too, if I lived in a house with a kitchen like this that just makes you want to cook something.

Somewhere in all of the commotion staff were working diligently on the party preparations. I wonder what she is making?

Cookies are placed on the table with the mixture that was being made in the previous picture. You might have already picked up on this, but she was making icing for decorating the cookies. The party guests will all try their hand at decorating cookies like the ones you often see in stores during Christmas time.

With that in mind, it’s a little bit boring with white as the only color, so red, yellow and pink icing is also made with food coloring. Now we’re all set.

No one had had a lot of experience with icing before, decorating their cookies with unsteady hands. Incidentally this is one of the very few male guests so I feel like I should barrack for him.

Everyone looking down in concentration. I wonder what kind of designs everyone is making? I can’t wait until they’re ready.

Guests set about finishing their designs with the announcement of “5 minutes to go!”

All done! It was interesting to see how everyone decorated their cookies differently. Everyone really seemed to enjoy the task so it was decided to hold a sudden decoration championship.

Voting was held by placing pieces of a chessboard that was in the house in front of their favorite decorated cookies. You could vote for yourself, of course, but I wonder where everyone put their chess pieces?

The winner was a resident of the house, with the most chess pieces.

Here is the number one work of art. The girls really liked the detailed design of the bow and the tree. You almost want to put them in a transparent bag and use them as decorations themselves, don’t you? Congratulations on 1st place in the Icing Design Championships!

The surprising thing was that two male guests tied for 2nd place. Using not just icing but peanuts and other sweets already on the table they created an original design copied by no one else. Here a a photo of the two guys.

Girls talk ensued while everyone ate the cookies they made. The house was alive with excitement as they chatted about various issues, including things they are working on, worries and troubles, and future prospects. Girls and guys even mingled together, chatting and giving advice.

With everyone caught up in having fun, the event was over before we could blink. Time flies when you’re having fun. Here’s a photo of all the guests to commemorate the occasion.

At first everyone was a little cautious of each other, but as the night went by with everyone having fun talking and sharing hobbies and interests I realised that you really can get on well and get to know anyone within the space of 3 hours. I suppose this is how it works when moving into a sharehouse too, gradually getting closer to each other as you spend more time together.

I mentioned that residents of the house won 1st and 2nd place in the icing competition, and I thought to myself that perhaps it was because they are living in a sharehouse, meeting new people and really refining their senses that they were able to come up with such original designs.

I would like to say thank you to the management team, the house tenants and also Girls+ and Power of Women for organising the event. I am a firm believer that fun and interesting times come out of living in a sharehouse, so look forward to the next event!

The secret to staying happy and continuing on in one’s job is to firmly maintain time for one’s self. We are often told such things, however it takes a lot of time and money to do this and is not such a simple thing for busy, working adults.

No doubt there are many people who want to start yoga or a cooking class on their days off, but find making the trek over to the venue difficult and end up spending the entire day at home.

Today we will show you Crann Terrace Kugaoka, a sharehouse almost too good to be true that answers to the needs of these working adults.

The house has a reading room, a studio, karaoke space, a soundproofed room and conference room in which you can enjoy a range of activities including reading, dancing, yoga, karaoke, musical performance, watching movies… a room’s purpose can change to suit your needs.

It can get annoying to take yourself all the way over to the gym or a classroom to indulge in your hobbies. This sharehouse saves you from that hassle so you can go about things in your own time.

If that wasn’t enough, being a large-scale property housing 62 people you can meet others with the same interests and enjoy them together in this house.

One house for a variety of uses – you can’t help but get excited just imagining the possibilities. So without further ado, let’s get on with the introduction!

Communication between tenants in this house will progress quite naturally, even more so if common interests are shared, and from there interaction will broaden out in all directions.

Looking after this house is Tokyo Defence, and as the name suggests, the company works towards protecting the life of its tenants by creating houses like this one. While connections between people and the city are becoming weaker, opportunities for communication abound at Crann Terrace Kugaoka.

Expand connections while working on your interests. At Crann Terrace Kugaoka you can try new things and discover the perfect pastime for you, interacting with people you normally wouldn’t and creating time for yourself. This, I believe, is the strong point of the sharehouse we have introduced to you today.

An autumn of reading, of sports, of food.

These are some of the new things I want to try this year before the leaves turn red and fall to the ground.

The day starts by leaving your house and walking the distance to the train station. Your briefcase is heavy with company documents and, enduring its weight, you finally arrive at the station. Now you have to wait for a crowded train. Surrounded by sea of people in every direction, you are rocked back and forth on the long train ride, unable to move. And, finally set free from the train, you arrive at work completely exhausted.

This is just how I imagine it in my own mind, however I am sure those living in the city have experienced something like this, or haven’t experienced yet can envision it so. While the comfortability of your own home is indeed important, so is choosing a pleasant location to live in.

Today we will introduce to you Domitori Nishimagome, a female-exclusive share house 1-minute walk from Nishimagome station on the Toei Asakusa line. Once a business hotel, this building has been renovated and re-opened as a share house and by stepping inside you will really feel as if you’re staying in a hotel.

You might be surprised at first at the low cost of 41,000 yen per month despite the house’s proximity to the station, but that’s not all – a free breakfast service (toast and coffee) is also provided every morning, making this a very good deal indeed.

Let’s have a look inside!!

Managing Dormitory Nishimagome is Nishimagome Daiichi Hotel group, which is run and operated by one family, so you can sense a kind of warmth associated with family management teams. Moreover, one appeal of the house is that a member of staff is stationed there permanently, so if ever anything happens you can consult them immediately.

There is relatively good transport access, and from nearby Nishimagome station you can get to Gotanda station in 8 minutes, which connects to the Yamanote line. The best thing for busy working women, though, is the fact that the distance between the station and the house is so short.

With this visit, we felt that it is a place where working women driven by time can reduce their work or school commute and spend more time for themselves, or enjoy chatting with friends without any time constraints.

Spending a luxurious morning sitting down in a chair with a toast and coffee before you is something you can only experience here at Dormitory Nishimagome.

The other day I wandered into a bookstore and in one of the books I ended up buying there was a story about how the world’s greatest business person wasn’t Steve Jobs or Walt Disney, but Mother Theresa.

I had thought of her to be more of a catholic nun or saint than a business woman, but finding out that with only 500 rupees in funds she constructed and developed the world’s largest organization, Missionaries of Charity, I agree that there has been no one with as much influence and achievements quite like her even to this day.

A management centered on ‘love’ is a good thing. A woman’s ability to communicate creating and strengthening bonds between people is something increasingly sought after in this day and age, and come to think of it, when compared with other industries there are quite a lot of professional females working in the share house business.

A share house is essentially many people living under one roof, and as such it is necessary to pay attention to every little detail from communal living rules to the size of the pot lids from a hygiene perspective in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for the tenants to live in. I have heard stories about newly opened share houses failing because of the stress of management, so I think one good indicator when choosing a place to live is to look at how long the management company has been in the industry.

Today we are introducing Korento House Omori, a share house 5-minutes walk from Shinagawa-ku’s Oomori Kaigan station. The company managing this house, Korento, specialized in developing female-exclusive share houses in June, 2006 long before share houses as we know them today came to be. As expected from a company which has grown and evolved through much trial and error, tenants can appreciate the attentive service and consideration that comes with such experience.

The media hypes up anything new, extravagant or unique, including many share houses fitting this description, however for those of you who seeking to live in a female-exclusive share house and think that there is more to it than that, perhaps this house and its management is just what you need. So, without further ado, here is Korento House Omori.

Korento Omori may not be furnished with fancy facilities, however you can still spend your days here in a safe environment, being comfortable and relaxing with your fellow tenants while gazing out at the view from the house.

In regards to the name, Korento, I actually thought it came from the English word ‘co-rent’ which would be quite fitting in the share house industry, however it is apparently Finnish for ‘dragonfly.’

The name was given in hope that the tenants too, like dragonflies, will spread their wings and grow into themselves slowly and steadily. When you think about it, shared living is a lifestyle in which you come in contact with many different sets of values. It’s a place where those searching for their true selves can find where they belong and their purpose in life.

Of course, one can’t find the place in which the belong so easily, and I don’t think it is necessarily something that must be found right away, however whatever is lacking when living alone may be found in abundance when living with others.

I might have been showing off a little by saying something like that, but the manager of the house then said to me, “We do want to support the tenants by giving them the peace of mind needed to create their own futures,” and hearing this I hope just quietly that this share house will lead to deep relationships never seen before between the staff and tenants.

Mother Theresa apparently once said looking upon wealthy Japan that “The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference”. In Japanese society today shared living has not just become popular because of its convenience and economic merits, and I pray that it gets more recognition as a legitimate way of life for many, many more people.

Come to think of it, the very first time I went to the Korento offices I received a business card that had written on the back not just the properties managed, but this phrase:

“Supporting your first step towards the future”

Visiting the Korento Omori share house, I really felt that someone who can introduce themselves so straight-forward like that, regardless of gender, must be pretty cool.
